Hi there! I've build my first system a few days ago and it randomly crashes on weird moments with no system load at all :/

My specs:
Amd Phenom II X4 940 (scythe mugen 2 cooler)
Asus M4N78 Pro mobo (video onboard)
OCZ HPS Reaper 1066mhz 2x2GB
Cooler Master Real Power 520w
OCZ Vertex 60GB + Samsung Spinpoint F1 640GB

I haven't overclocked it, latest bios installed and bios settings are standard.

My computer boots fine, installs windows fine.. no problems at all there, but it hangs on really weird moments, with no stress at all :S For example: I opened firefox, clicked on the search field at google and suddenly my pc hung.. ctrl + alt + del wasn't possible..

The pc sometimes does show "not responding" at the headers before it crashes.. ctrl/alt/del never possible.. have to hard-reboot it every time :S

My cpu is around 30-35 degrees idle and the mobo at 25~ according to Asus PC-Probe and the Bios. Memtest X86 gave no errors.

What could be causing these crashes? I've tried official XP Pro SP3 and Windows 7 RC, both had these random crashes every now and then.

Could be anything really. Is your ram getting the factory specified voltage?

Hmm not sure.. haven't checked that yet.. will do when I get home

But if it doesn't get the right voltage, wouldn't memtest give errors?

I haven't installed any drivers yet, just windows.. could this be causing the problem?
Why does the cpu need a driver? If it needed a driver it should've came with a cd or something I guess..

Possibly the cause, but Windows bundle basic drivers for most everything. Go to device mgr, and open up processors. The AMD ones optimizes Windows for their cpus.

Open device manager. You will see device entries with big yellow !'s and ?'s where you have missing drivers. The !'s need to be fixed. the ?'s should be.

Installing the drivers may fix your problem.

Okey guys, it happened to me again :S

The pc randomly crashed while browsing the internet and I can't find any cause in the event viewer.

This is what happend:

-----------------

Firefox showed "not responding" in the title bar... I couldn't click anything.. so I tried CTRL ALT DEL -> the task manager showed up, but I closed it, because I wanted to see if firefox would become responsive again on its own.

Nothing really happened so I tried to click the "close" button in firefox.. It showed up a window: "program not responding, end now?"

Then suddenly the screen went black, only the mouse pointer was visible and I was still able to move the mouse pointer.. Tried CTRL ALT DEL again.. this showed up an error window saying that the task manager could not be loaded..

Then it suddenly showed windows again (firefox still saying "not responding").. I tried to restart the pc by clicking on the restart button in the start menu, but nothing happend, so I had to manually reboot my pc :S

-----------------

The pc isn't crashing instantly, also no BSOD or anything..... Programs say "not responding" in the title bar every now and then - and then everything slowly stops working :S

memtest gave no errors after 12h, so it's not the memory...

what could it be?

was there a driver disc with the mb? Did you run it and install the drivers?
Your posts suggest you didnt , and even though thats not likely to be the problem you should do it and eliminate it as a problem .

Might as well check the RAM voltage , and set it correctly . But that is not likely to be the problem either .

Sounds like a software issue .
Use msconfig to nuke everything that isnt windows from your start up and then start introducing programs one at a time . Start with your AV and firewall .

Then browser

I'll check the drivers and the RAM voltage tonight..

I hope it is a software issue, but if it is, then why isn't windows capable of shutting down the process? If software crashes, that shouldn't normally crash the entire system right? Kinda unlikely that an unresponsive firefox can crash my entire system... hmm :/

There is one big yellow ? (under unknown devices), but I can't seem to find drivers for that... It's called "Coprocessor" or something like that (not sure, I'm not at home)..

It happened again in firefox, while watching something in youtube... Had to reboot.

Then I watched a movie in windows media player, and it crashed.. I rebooted and played it again and then it crashed again after some time.... I was able to get the task manager up but neither times I could kill the process..

The device manager shows up no errors or warnings or whatsoever. I installed all drivers for mobo/cpu/chipset etc...

------------

I was thinking.. Could it be my harddrive? I think it has something to do with the power..

I noticed that ACPI was standardly disabled in my bios.. I enabled that and tried to play the movie several times and my pc did not crash.. Could this be it? Maybe my harddrive was getting insufficient power at some times, causing it to crash..

I have 3 sata devices.. OCZ SSD - Samsung Spinpoint and an LG DVD writer... I have em all on 1 power cable connected to the modular Cooler Master 520W PSU. Could this also be a problem? Would it be better to use an additional cable so I won't have 3 devices on one?
