I asked a question 2 years ago (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2547055/usb-disconnect-sound-plays-randomly.html) re: a random device disconnect sound in a Windows 7 machine (sometimes not for several hours, this morning 3x in a row.

I recently bought an Intel NUC and the same sound has followed me to Win 10 and the new machine. I bought a new track mouse, swapped out my keyboard and monitor, disabled USB selected suspend settings in Power Settings, bought a new powered USB hub, turned off the onboard audio, again tried USBDeview, etc. - still persists.

To summarize, this issue has continued through 2 computers and almost totally different hardware.

Any ideas? And again, if I've turned off onboard audio, where can that infernal "DUD-DUH" disconnect sound be coming from? At this point, I'd just like to shut it off.

Thank you for any input!

Hi there. I had a similar issue so what helped me figure out the problem was to "see" exactly what device was giving me the problem. I used a free utility called USBDview by Nirsoft. I am no way affiliated with them and should you use their utility, you do so at your own risk.

Anyway, the utility is a small exe file that you run as a standalone application. Just run it, click on the "Connected" column to sort from Yes to No status. Watch it for as long as it takes and see what keeps disconnecting reconnecting. It will be very obvious because what's connected is highlighted in green and once something disconnects, it remains in the same position but the green highlight diminishes.

It turned out that my keyboard...of all things...was going out or had some short in it. I knew I had solved the problem when I disconnected the keyboard and the sound went away. Normally, the sound would come on randomly within 5-10 minutes and keep going offline every few seconds.

I hope this helps. I don't think I can post links here so just do a search for the tool. Upon writing this the tools version is 2.71 and is virus-free and malware-free. The website gives known issues and incompatibilities but the function you need it for works on ALL versions of Windows from 7 on, as of Sept 2017.
