Question Random IOPs for gaming

First let's assume they are all the same price.

I have seen the Samsung 990 Pro and SN850X rated at the top for gaming, but why not the Corsair MP600 Elite? What am I missing?

My understanding is the Random IOPS is the best measurement for in game performance especially in MMORPGs which are my primary games.

With the MP600 Elite with 50,611 Random IOPs, 6707 Seq MB/s, 1792 Copy MB/s PCIe 4.0 x4, Phison E27T, 162-Layer Kioxia TLC
compared to Samsung 990 Pro 43,295 Random IOPs 6985 Seq MB/s, 1842 Copy MB/s PCIe 4.0 x4, WD_Black G2, 96-Layer Kioxia TLC
and SN850X at 43,669 Random IOPS 6028 Seq MB/s, 1669 Copy MB/s PCIe 4.0 x4, Samsung Pascal, 176-Layer Samsung V-NAND TLC

My guess is you will never see any difference. Why? Because synthetic benchmarks don't represent real usages. If you find reviews of those products, you might find game load times. That is a real-world usage. Even then, the delta might be a few seconds. Is that significant? IMO, no.

When Tom's tested these drives (https://www.tomshardware.com/features/ssd-benchmarks-hierarchy) did they not use real world data? They used synthetic?

In the article it says "We've sorted by the random QD1 IOPS results for the tables — the geometric mean of both the read and write IOPS, to be precise. This is one of the more realistic representations of overall SSD performance, even if it's a synthetic test, as it's difficult to game the system."

It did not test with the games you play.

Also...
It should be immediately obvious that there's not much difference between the various PCIe 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 drives when it comes to QD1 random I/O.
They won't be the same in every instance, but for moderate use, just about any of these SSDs will still perform competently.
