hi, i have a gaming system that i have been using in its current state for almost 3 ysrs, it is a i5-2400 on a z68 gigabyte motherboard, with a galaxy gtx 660 gc gpu, 8 gb ram a 256 samsung 850 evo and a 1 tb hardrive where all my games are installed, running on a fresh install of windows 10, and the latest geforce experience and clean install of the latest nvidia driver. what happens is after compouter is left on for a few hours if i go to play any game steam or origin my fps will go down to 10-15 and when i check extreme tuner plus even after game is turned off, like at the battlelog page it will show gpu pegged at cpu clock at 1005 and these low fps will be happening, if i rebbot my computer everything will go back to normal and normal gaming of 75 fps for several hours. next day same thing happens. i thought this was the gpu, but galaxy tech support says since it straightens out after a reboot it probally is software or cpu going bad? i checked memtest for ram looks good so dont know what to try next? any help would be appreciated, also gpu temps are in the 30c at idle and max at mid 60c during gaming which is supposed to be fine for this card, it has always been like that for last 2 1/2 years. i think galaxy may be trying to brust me off since warranty expires in about 30 days mike

I've think that it's possibly more CPU than GPU, due to the FPS going back to normal after a restart then it may not be a GPU issue. Check yourCPU temps when gaming and after about 2-3 hours see how hot your CPU actually gets. It seems asif you've came to the conclusion that it is GPU related so you haven't really tested your CPU. If temps are above 85 ish after about 2-3 hours it is probably a problem with your heatsink.

You haven't specified what heatsink you have or what CPU compound you are using. If it's a stock cooler then CPU compound is pre-applied but if you bought a third party cooler then you would've had to apply thermal compound yourself.

I personally change my CPU compound every 6-12 months or so to prevent it from...

I personally change my CPU compound every 6-12 months or so to prevent it from drying up and cracking. If your CPU temps are getting high then check that your thermal compound isn't cracked on your heatsink.

If your PC was a pre-build then you may need to get someone to remove the heatsink for you if you don't know how to.

hey thanks, it is the stock cooler and i did check that fan was turning, and went into bios and checked temp but that was at startup, but this pc is almost 5 years old and have never reapplied thermal compound so thanks that will be my next step. is there any software you recommend that shows your cpu temp?

I use CPUz for monitoring temps so try that and make sure that you don't apply to much thermal compound, You can spread it but I advise putting a small pea sized blob on the CPU and then putting the cooler back on so it spreads evenly on it's own. Also make sure you get a good thermal compound, cheaping out on thermal compound isn't really recommended and the better stuff is usually around £5-6 anyway so it's not going to kill anyone's bank account.
