Random musings about Morrowind

Hey all,

Well, it's late, and for some reason, I can't sleep. I just decided to post
some random musings and observations about Morrowind, because, well, you
know, this is the Morrowind newsgroup.

When I first heard about this game, my first reaction was "oh no, not
another stupid first person shooter" I thought it was going to be something
along the lines of Half Life. I saw my friend play it on is Xbox and I
thought it was really boring. In fact a couple times when I was hanging out
watching him play the game, I actually fell asleep on his couch! I think it
had something to do with the mellow music and the color palette.

Anyways, I upgraded my computer about a month ago from a PII-450 to a
Celeron 2.3 gig machine. Great! I've finally got a decent computer. All I
needed were a few good games. My friends lent me a copy of Leisure Suit
Larry, Dawn of War, and Morrowind. Well, Leisure Suite Larry turned out to
be really lame despite the ocassional nudity and Dawn of War was cool but
repetitive. Then I popped in Morrowind. It was like meeting a long lost
friend that you never knew you had. My first impressions were completely
wrong, it is such a good game! I haven't been this addicted to an RPG since
Fallout!

The first person perspective and real-time combat was jarring at first, but
I quickly got used to it and adapted. All the flexibility and the
interactive qualities were simply impressive. I love how you can interact
with almost every single piece of object lying around. The idea of walking
into someone's home and being able to pick up their random trappings was a
great touch. I also love how you can make your own potions and spells!
Also, the way monsters leave alchemy ingredients and the way ingredients can
be found on common plants was really nifty. Aside from all the random
objects, I also found the gameplay to be nicely open-ended. There is just
simply an overwhelming number of things to do. Oh, and who can forget the
many little dungeons sprinkled all over the landscape? I love wandering
into a smuggler's den and cleaning it out for the loot. All the little
touches really make this an excellent game, like the weather effects, the
soul-trapping, the armor repair, the skills system etc. Oh, and I
absolutely love the skill system! You actually have to use a skill to get
better at it! What an amazing concept. I read somewhere that the game
designers were big fans of Nethack, and it shows. All this and it fits on
ONE disc! Simply amazing. I can think of several inferior games that need
to be on 3 or 4 discs.

The only major flaw with this game is the dialogue. It's adequate, but it
doesn't match the level of excellence found in other aspects of the game,
like say, alchemy. In Black Isle games like Fallout and Baldur's gate, the
dialogue was fantastic. Morrowind, on the other hand had O.K. dialogue but
I guess that will have to wait for the next sequal.

Well, if you've made it this far in my rant, thanks for reading! I hope to
beat this game someday, but I always get distracted by the sidequests.
Maybe if I ignore all those little dungeons I can beat the game.

Welcome to a great game. I agree with you that the complexity is
wonderful and the ambience is even better.

I've "discovered" Morrowind for a couple of month's ago. I also think it's a
absolutely cool game ;-)
I've always playes firsthand-shooter games like counter-strike and
Battlefield, which's still cool, but I just wanted to try something new and
since I have played strategy-games before, adventure was a natural choice.
And WOW, I've spend a LOT of hours on this game 🙂
