Question Random network usage while idled

Today I left my computer idled with my vpn open. I know how a vpn works, but I looked over and it said I was downloading 4kb/s. Is this the vpn connecting to servers or a bigger problem?

Even when you don't do anything on the PC, network traffic is constantly going back and forth, so that's normal. Most likely it's your PC and VPN server communicating between each other and maintaining the connection. Many programs also use background services to keep them up to the date, e.g Google Chrome.
