Hello,

A few months ago I upgrade my PC especially the GPU from the old ATI to MSI GTX 960. After upgrading, I have experienced many random no signal to my monitor when booting my PC, resetting the PC a few times usually fix the problem.

At first it occurs rarely, and then after some time it becomes more often to the point that my resetting PC power trick no longer working. No matter how many times I reset, it always shows no signal.

I then tried to reset the BIOS via jumper, it works. And then after some time, the random no signal occurs again. It repeats again until the problem force me to reset BIOS again.

To summarize: Occasional no signal => Total no signal => Reset BIOS, return to normal => back to occasional no signal

I once tried removing the GPU and just use onboard VGA, my PC boots normally.

This is frustrating, I would appreciate any help. Is my GPU broken, or my BIOS broken, or it's not compatible with my mobo?

Btw, here is my PC spec:

  • MSI GTX 960 2Gb Tiger Edition 128Bit DDR5 (GTX960 2GD5T OC) NVidia PCI Exp.
    AsRock Z77 Extreme 4
    Intel Core i5 3570K 3,4 GHz
    V-GEN 8GB PC 12800 / 1600 V-GEN DDR3
    Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500413AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
    ENERMAX NAXN 82+ 650W - ETL-650AWT

could be a few issues. one make sure the mb has the newest bios file on it to rule out a bios bug. the second issue can be a failing power supply. with the gpu out the opnly load is the cpu on the 12v rail. if the rail is weak or a part is failing on the power supply this shows up when the most load is needed (power on inrush) check the power supply voltages in the bios and use hardware info 64 set it to sensor and logging look at 12v rail with and without the gpu.

Unfortunately, the last BIOS update is at 2013 and I already have the latest update. I will try to look into the power supply, it sounds pretty technical

You need clean your boot. Because its sticks to old devices or devices with different "profiles". Or just upgrades.

1. Shutdown your pc
2. Switch off the power supply from the back
3. Remove power cable from the power supply
4. Open your case and remove the RAMs
5. Put the power supply cable back in
6. Switch on power supply
7. Wait for 10 minutes with out RAMs. DONT TURN ON THE PC, Only let it on power for 10 minutes.
8. After 10 min switch power supply off
9. Open case and put the RAMs again into the motherboard (slot 1,3 or 2,4)
10. Switch on the power supply and turn the pc on.

This is a procedure that we technicians do to clean "old profiles". This happens if you install a new component and you didn't uninstalled previous drivers and stuck at black screen.
You can also renew boot manager but this is a different method.

Ahhh ok, when I switch my GPU, I didn't uninstall the previous GPU driver first, I heard this will create problems in the future. I will try this solution, unfortunately I can only see if the solutions works or not after a month using the PC. Hopefully no more no signal problem

It doesn't work 🙁 This morning I experienced another no signal, tried to do the clean boot steps you mentioned and still no signal
