Hey all,

I have a question...thought it doesn't involve my computer.

My friend's computer is an AMD K6-2, with 128 megs of ram...running on a
wireless network, Symantec Corporate installed, Ad-aware and Spybt updated
and ran.

Lately, she's been having random restarts for no reason. No errors, no
nothing.
I suggested it being overheated, but she says it's not that.

I'm sure it could be any number of things, but is there any other things I
could try?

Hmm, Could be a system service like the RPC Being closed, checked event logs
under administrative tools?

Hi,

Possible way to find clues about random restarts:
Right click My Computer, tab Advanced, Start and recovery, UNcheck
Automatically reboot.
After next random reboot check most recent System and Application logbook
entries for clues.

If you suspect hardware:
Just to make sure, check CPU temp. in BIOS' PC health section.
Should be below 65C, better below 60C.
If too high:
- Clean any dust from cpu fan and heatsink.
- Check CPU heatsink: must be mounted flush to cpu.
- Renew cooling paste between cpu and heatsink.
Else try running with case open for a while (other component overheated?)
Else run RAM test: SIMMtester / DocMem (www.simmtester.com).
Else revert to BIOS safe settings, then BIOS optimized settings (First:
write down current settings)
Else try using an alternate computer power supply.

HTH,
John7

Random crashes suggest timing problems. Try decreasing the clock rate
or FSB multipler. Some memory chips just don't measure up.
