Random shut downs

I have had an intermittent problem that has me tearing my hair out. It seems heat-related but not entirely.

I have an Asus X-99 A-II motherboard with an i7 5850 CPU, Antec 850w PS, Geforce 1070, and 32gb DD4. What happens is that once in awhile, the machine more or less randomly semi-shuts down. It seems to possibly be heat related at times, but not always.

The "semi" shut down is the first mystery. It doesn't simply power-off. What happens is that the screen goes dark and the fans go full-speed. The lights on the motherboard do NOT go out.

The machine is non-responsive at this point and you have to remove the power cable from the power supply.

At this point, if you simply plug it back in and restart it, there's a good chance it won't make it all the way through POST before it shuts down again.

If you want a minute or two, then it might make it to Windows only to shut down again a minute or three later.

You generally have to let it cool off for 40 minutes or so before it reliably stays on again.

Certainly that last part sounds like it's heat-related, yet if I jump into the BIOS right away the temperatures seem normal with CPU temps in the mid-30's.

Any ideas?
