Random temporary freezing with 9600XT!!!

Sometimes (randomly, it has only happened about 3 times in the past few days since I got it) my mouse cursor freezes and I cant move it. My hard drive looks like it is doing something and then after maybe 10 seconds, it unfreezes. Why could this be?

I recently upgraded from a Radeon SDR 32MB (equiv. to Radeon 7000) to a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 128MB. I am using the Catalyst 4.1 drivers. I uninstalled the previous drivers before upgrading to the newer card, so I dont know what the problem could be.

Heres my setup:
-Asus A7V8X (133x14)
-Athlon XP 2500+ (1867Mhz)
-256MB Mushkin PC2100
-Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 128MB (Overdrive enabled)
-Windows XP Professional
-400W or 425W generic power supply
-Maxtor SATA 120GB 7200rmp (WinXP installed here)
-WD 60GB 5400rpm

My computer had been working correctly until I upgraded to this new card.

Sounds like the system is short on memory and using the page file, or...something fishy running in the background thats hogging all the resources.

I currently have 75MB of RAM free, sometimes it goes up to 120MB, sometimes it goes down to 30MB, but I doubt it is a memory problem, as the only change that I have done to my computer recently is the video card.

I did notice that each separate process of iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer) takes up between 20MB to 30MB. Why does it use so much RAM?

Mine vary between 15-20mb, but i don't have any custom toolbar installed so it may be the difference.

Anyway when the comp sorta freeze and you see hard drive light flashing "hard", it usually means the OS is trying to access data from the hard drive. Not sure whats causing the problem, i wouldnt assume a round of virus scan/spyware scan/scan disk/defrag to eliminate some possible problems...

PS. is your comp networked?

Vague guess - New video card drivers came with some nice little tray apps which have consumed loads more memory (compared to whatever old ones, if any)? try ensuring you have nothing open that you don't <i>need</i>.. i.e. stupid stuff like 'Quicktime Task' is totally pointless.

256Mb seems to be pretty much the accepted <i>minimum</i> for XP. another 256Mb would probably make a world of difference. I also note you have a Barton 2500+ which should run on a FSB of 166/333DDR, but your RAM is only PC2100 (133Mhz/266DDR) so are you overclocking your RAM, or just running it not in synch with the CPU FSB? running asynchronous RAM/FSB is not great for performance. maybe you should just get a 512Mb stick of DDR333 stuff (PC2700) to replace your existing one? depends if you have any available cash as to what you do.

I don't have any custom toolbars in IE, so i do not know what it could be. I currently have one iexplore.exe open and it takes about 15MB, so maybe the memory consumption spikes were not permanent.

Yes, I have my computer networked to my university internet connection. 10Mbps.

I ran Ad-Aware 6 and scanned for viruses with Norton Antivirus and it came out clean.

Thanks for replying. I disabled the ATi taskbar icon and I dont have any other unnecessary icons there.

Since i only have 1 stick of PC2100 ram, I am running my FSB at 133 and my multiplier at 14. My RAM is running at 133MHz (DDR266). I am planning on getting a stick of 512MB when the Corsair XMS Low Latency ram is on Sale somewhere.

I have FastWrite enabled in the BIOS, but it FastWrite is disabled in the ATi control panel SmartGART tab. Could that be the problem?

Disable the AVR (auto video recovery) in the display properties/advanced

I have that kind of problem too, but mine is when my computer is using/reading a disc from the two cd drives i have (DVD-rom and a CD-RW rom)... Freezes for a few moments (mouse stops responding) and after about 10 secs it comes back again. 😵
