Ok, let me start by saying i've tested the following hardware with the following software:

Memory - 2GB 1066Mhz Memtestx86 (Passed)
Hard Drive (WD500Gb 3 partitions Inc Win7 Boot Partition) - HDTune Pro Slow Test (Fine)
GPU - Tested and working Fine (Stress Test using various progs)

The motherboard is a P5WD2-E Asus with a Quad 4 Intel 2.4Ghz Processor
The power supply is also fine, runs other systems with no issues.

No Viruses (Used AVG alongside Windows Defender)

The trouble is this...

The system will allow me to boot to the OS, the BIOS reports no SMART issues but when running Win7 Pro x86 it keeps halting no matter what programs are running. It will happily run multiple programs all day long then suddenly everything freezes like its waiting to catch itself up? I've swapped drives and the same issues occur. If i leave it like 5 or 10 minutes (No exaggeration) it will suddenly burst into life running all the operations at ridiculous speed. For example..

If Mozilla crashed and i clicked on the start menu then hit ctrl-alt-del for the task manager it will stop for 5 mins then literally flash Mozilla up, the start menu will open and close and the security screen for getting to the task manager will boot all in about a second. Everything will run fine then the same issue might occur when running any other program.

I've already changed the pagefile location from C: to E: and back but it didn't help. Neither did 2 system re-installs.

It also keeps giving me a Chkdsk at the win startup with all sorts of orphaned files, minor name changes and other strange stuff....

Has anyone got any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks in advance...

Im quite techy but not all that 😉

Solution
Ok, when you say you "swapped drives", you're saying that you had the same problem happen, but with Windows installed on 2 separate physical drives? That would mean it's not a hard drive error, because the chances of 2 separate drives having the identical issue at the same time are extremely slim.

If you mean that you have it on different partitions (different drive letters, but same physical drive), then it could be a hard drive issue.

In any case, are you having any heat spikes or other heat-related issues?

Also, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7? You're kind of OK on RAM for 32-bit (although 4GB would be good if you can manage it), but for 64-bit you're right on the minimum operating requirements. And...

And the "freezing up then suddenly playing catch-up" sounds a lot more like insuffiicent memory than a hard drive problem.

Solution
Yes, i did use 2 physical drives.. The issue, believe it or not was the Drive Temperature (35c). I re-arranged my case and fans and everything is working far better, got it down to about 23c. Just maybe this could be an issue for others.

I know 2Gb is a little low but its all i have to work with atm.

I probably is due to low memory as well... both issues having an impact really (Its win7 32Bit)

Thanks for your advice and support.
