Randomly overheating laptop

I have an Asus x550za laptop which overheats and shuts down seemingly randomly and this can happen at idle. My question is... Should I buy a new one? This one seems to have a problem with its sensor possibly? I just can't see how this could happen at idle. I opened it up, cleaned out all the dust, made sure there was very good airflow from the fan to the exhaust, and I even redid the thermal compound. Everything seemed great at first after I did the repair. I ran stress tests with the CPU staying within the thermal margin the whole period of the test. Then I just happened to be watching the idle temps. They were great. Then the temps started rising quickly and it shut down. I didn't feel heat coming out of the vent either just slightly warmer than room temperature air. I believe the sensor on the APU is a bit wonky because there's no way it's actually heating up that much and I can't feel the heat. The bottom of the laptop was also rather cool. I ran stress tests with better temps and I could feel the heat coming out during the stress tests. I don't see how it could be anything but a bad sensor.

Suggestions for a new laptop.

My budget is up to $400. Unfortunately that's all I can spend unless I save up. But I don't want to be stuck with this laptop that keeps shutting off on me for an extra month. I want intel, I want good battery life, I want 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB HDD. Preferably a 15.6 inch screen.

Do I need a laptop?

I could probably do fine with a tablet. I just need something to take with me when I go places other than my room. I have a pretty good desktop computer in my room. Sometimes when I just want to relax on the bed I use my laptop in my room as well. BUT I rather do enjoy having the desktop experience on the go.

I have a nice cooling pad. It does nothing to solve my issue.
