Hi all,

I currently have a Seagate NAS and an Nvidia Shield as my media setup.
The NAS is connected to my router via lan and so is my shield. I bought the NAS thinking
That it would be a cool addition but it’s very loud and does not play well with Kodi.
Updating the libraries takes forever and when I transfer files to it, at times it just packs up and I have
To restart the entire NAS via the web portal or by unplugging and plugging back in.

I’m thinking of moving on to a raspberry pi, primarily because I think that it’ll be cool to play around with it
And it can be more than just a media server. My idea is to pair it up with a multi bay enclosure so that all my
Media will be available, along with my books etc.
Do y’all think that that set up will be quieter than a NAS?

Solution
Cool to play - yes
Media server - not exactly. The only way to attach storage is thru USB (meaning additional boxes, PSUs, cabling), and unless you go with RPi 4, it is going to be slow. If you rely on transcoding, it will be slow as well.

You better find out what is wrong with your NAS.

Solution
[I've used a raspberry Pi with an external SSD with minimserve 2 (UPnP)for playing music. Ive done it for 4 years now including the first version of minimserve. I used kodi until it would not allow me to search via folders rather than artist.
