So my computer has got slower and slower this past year. I found that my CPU was overheating (86-87 Celsius) and am going to be applying more thermal paste on the CPU.
My question here is: Is my computer a good set up for gaming or should I upgrade?
I have been wanting to for the last 2 years but haven't gotten around to doing it. I just think that my CPU is too old and isn't good enough for the latest games that are out or are coming out. I would appreciate any advice in regards to this conundrum. I am wanting to play games at 60fps but I like graphics at the same time.

My specs are:

CPU: Phenom II X6 1090T 3.2GHz

RAM: 8GB (Cheap RAM 2x4GB)

Graphics Card: Nvidia ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (Recently Brought)

HDD: 500GB

Motherboard: ASUS M4A88T-M

Monitor: ViewSonic VX2757 27" 1ms 75Hz

Case: 470mm(L) x 430mm(H) x 220mm(W)

1 External fan.

I want to get a new case as to get my graphics card in I had to bend some metal of the case that I wasn't using in order to get it in. Because of this I can not put my side cover on any more 🙁 :/

Thank you

that is a 7 year old cpu more or less, ore i think

it is a bottleneck by itself

if it is overheating surely is thermal throttling itself making things worse

the gpu is great but the rest of the machine, i would upgrade it, of course, saving the gpu

while you assemble a new pc, i would not only apply new thermal paste, i would get a new cooler for that cpu, if you are with the stock cooler, if you have a good cooler the thermal paste should help, also a good clean of the pc

about the case, leave it open, you only have one fan, for those parts you should have one fan in the front and one in the back, minimum, you need a case with two fans in the front and at least on in the back

after you assemble the new pc, leave the old phenom as a plan b pc or sell it as it is

Thank you all this has helped ease my mind lol.
The Ryzen is a AMD correct?

My plan was to upgrade to

Intel Kaby Lake Core i7 7700K Unlocked CPU 4.2GHz
2x8GB ADATA Z1 XPG RAM DDR4 2800Mhz
SSD
Bigger HDD
Bigger Case
Motherboard the supports the CPU and the RAM.

I don't have a budget really, not too expensive like maybe around $1000 for upgrades but don't mind going over that.

Would you suggest AMD or Intel CPUs for gaming?

Don't go Intel. 😛
AMD are the better choice now, identical gaming performance above 1080p, a little worse AT 1080p but still killer, and way better in other application.
Look at this, your PSU is most likely old too, so i've put in an SLI capable high quality unit that'll last a long time.
Case is also top of the line, dead quiet, has a tempered glass panel, and wireless Qi Charging included on the top, as well as Silent Wings 3 fans, the best around.
This'll set you up for a long time to come, only upgrades left are maybe an 1170/1180 with the 11 series and a 1440p 144hz monitor or similar.

atm ram and gpus are on a weird situation

intel is great but lately i am getting tired of hearing people having problems with that i7 7700k thanks to intel not applying the proper thermal material in the cpu so it doesn't overheat in a weird way

i would get a amd too, the intel is a bet and many people have lost it with that exact cpu
