CASE: NZXT TEMPEST
PSU: CORSAIR HX-1000 (1000watts)
CPU: INTEL Q6600 2.4ghz (not yet overclocked - still not sure how)
GPU: EVGA GTX 285 x2 SLI (Overclocked to the GTX 285 SSC Edition)
HS: MASSCOOL 8WA741
MB: EVGA 750i SLI FTW
RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 800mhz 8GB
HDD: 500GB SEAGATE

If Im missing anything just ask. Room temps are 75 degrees. CPU Temps are 35 idle/45-50 load. GPU Temps 40 idle/50-60 load.ALL AIR COOLED.Can run CRYSIS,CRYSIS WARE AND FAR CRY 2 All on top setting and 4xAA.

Q6600 is not overclocked at all, which more than likely is holding back your SLI GTX280s.

Probably won't get more than 3.2ghz max overclock, since your using 8gigs of ram. Nvidia's NB has a lot of heat already.

HSF is not well known, it'll generate alot of heat once you start to overclock.

Could have saved a lot of money on a 750w PSU, and 2 GTX 275s or better yet 2 4890 and ditch the nVidia motherboard. Also that heatsink definitely isn't the greatest and I would not even try to overclock past 2.8-3.0 Ghz, definitely no voltage increases with it if at stock you are loading at 50c. My mother's PC loads at 40c on stock with a Xigmatek HDT-s1283 and 65c @ 3.6 Ghz, 70c @ 3.8 Ghz. Also if you just bought the Q6600 then you made a mistake as the Q8300 and Phenom II X4 920 would be significantly better choices, though if you salvaged it then it is still a great CPU.

If you thought I was being harsh than I am not, it is much better than most of the systems people build because it is actually very nice, not perfect, but it will destroy any game you throw at it.

He plans on overclocking, but isn't sure how so I would not put that against him unless he doesn't take the time to learn. Besides the stock Q6600 wont hold him back too much.

Your motherboard is fine, just overclock your Q6600 a lil and your PC benchmarks will improve a lot.

Just something that stood out at me... since you didn't state any units of measurement, I'm guessing they're all the same. Those CPU and GPU temps look like Celsius, because those figures in Fahrenheit would be godly... so your room temp's 75 degrees Celsius? That'd be keep a coffee nice and toasty.

Anyway... to the PC... Pretty meh overall, you've obviously thrown a lot of cash at it, but why only a Q6600 ? Don't get me wrong, it's a great chip, but there are better ones these days.

Anyway... I give it a 4 for a couple of reasons, firstly the build's not really that well rounded, too much spent on the GPU, not enough on the CPU, and PSU's overkill. Secondly, as people have said, the stock-ness of the CPU is rather unimpressive

Running 4 sticks of 2GB RAM are going to eat that Nvidia memory controller up. I would run 2 sticks max on those boards. I run the 780i myself and dont have any problems but you also knew going into it that the memory controller is kind of weak.
I would have went with a 45nm Quad myself but the Q6600 is a proven CPU and should keep you happy for a while.

power supply ensure no upgrading for awhile
gpu's were free to me
cpu was cheap and knew it would overclock well (just dont knnow how to do it)

You can read up on the overclocking guide here, and from other web site. Familiarized yourself with the terms and what they represent. Then go ahead and try it yourself, I would do something easy like maybe 200mhz - 400mhz more. Always make sure you stress test with Prime95 or others like Orthos,OCCT,LinX, Intel Burn Test. Don't use gaming as a stress test.

If you find that heat is becoming a problem, you may want to go ahead and find a better, well reviewed cooler, in the lines of Prolimatech Megahelam, T.R.U.E. or Noctua NH-U12P. These are samples of high end coolers. If you like you can opt for the mid range cooler, Xigmatek S1283, Dark Knight, S1284, OCZ Vendetta 2, Sunbeam CCF.

Personally I use Prime95 and OCCT. I like to run it for 10hrs+ if I really want to keep my overclock the way it is.

i highly doubt you would see a difference. try it both ways. i would almost guarantee it is more stable with 2 sticks sitting on your desk.

The only way you could merit a 1000w is if you get a 3rd GTX 285, which you likely wont since it wont be cost effective and it wont give you much of a boost, especially for the price. That said you would also need a new motherboard to do that. Your system will never use more than 700w and gaming will never get it that high to begin with. If you feel happy with your purchase than thats good, but you could have saved some money and that is all we are getting at.

^ Two GTX285s are very power hungry. The 1000watt was a good decision.

800watt would have been the bare minimum...but you should never skimp on a good PSU

Exactly, that system will never load over 700w even when it is extremely overclocked and is running maxed out.
