Hi all

Today my laptop unexpectedly powered off and when I tried to reboot the machine Windows would not load.

Upon further inspection I noticed the C volume where Win 7 is stored has changed from a NTFS partition to a RAW partition. From Win 7 Startup Repair I can also see that the Boot Sector is corrupt.

I have downloaded Hirens boot cd aswell as Parted Magic and am trying to recover the data before re-installing the OS. Any of the tools I have tried (Testdisk, PhotoRec and many more) are unable to access the filesystem where my data is stored.

I also have Symantec PGP (Desktop Client) installed and I am wondering if the fact that the disk is encrypted is impeding my attempt to access the partition. I should be able to decrypt the disk using a Recovery CD but I have being told that this may take 3 days to decrypt. I was hoping to recover the files even if they are encrypted in the short term. If I confirm I can access the files I will then start on decrpying the data. I do not want to spend 3 days decrypting the disk if in the end I will not be able to recover the files due to the corruption.

Can anyone say if the encryption software is in fact the reason that no tool can access my partition/filesystem.

Many thanks for the support in advance.

Solution
if the disk is encrypted, the recovery software is unable to see any files on the drive.

it could also be the reason that the c: drive shows as RAW.

You might want to contact symantec for help

Thank you. I will work on decrypting the disk and re-try the recovery tools.

How to decrypting ? Please give me solution.. bexause my hard drive file system change RAW

I used Symanetc PGP for encryption so using Symantec Recovery cd for decryption.
Started de-crypt on Tuesday midday - 50 hours later and i still have 32% to go..it is a long process :)

Hopefully once decrypted I can boot using Linux live cd and use data recovery tools or boot sector repair tools
