Razor Megaladon No sound

so much time spent trying to fix this. running out of ideas. Tried everything.
Running MSI GE-70 3610 laptop with windows 7 SP1.
currently i plug them in and get device not recognised. occasionally they will work, before cutting out soon after and again becoming unrecognisable. All the lights on the headset are on and the microphone will permanently show in sound. i have updated all drivers and tried installing firmware, which i now struggle to do as most times the device is unrecognisable. tried all four of usb ports, have changed the usb hubs to not save power.
I tried disabling the sound card first from bios which i couldn't do, so then i disabled from device manager and still no resolution. any more idea's appreciated i'm very close to giving up.

also i should add. they have previously been working fine. i did pack them away for ~2 weeks and after taking out the cord seemed a little dodgy which i seemed to fix with a bit of tape.
It didn't seem to happen previous to this although my memory is hazy about whether it was happening before or after.
