So I was going to wait until late this year to re-build my computer but I would actually like to run everything coming up in Star Citizen without issues so I think I will probably re-build my machine within the next couple months. I have a $1k limit I would like to stay under to keep me from wife aggro.

Current:
EVGA 480 GTX
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
I7-950
12gb 1600 HyperX

Planned Upgrade:
EVGA Superclocked 760GTX 2GB GDDR5
ASUS Maximus VI Hero LGA 1150 Z87
i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz
2x4Gb G_Skill Sniper DDR3 1866 PC3-14900 (Can always add another 8 if this isn't sufficient)

Any suggestions on better components or a combination of components that may be better would be appreciated I have not looked into hardware a whole lot since I built my last machine and that was when the 480GTX first came out so it has been a while.

i wouldn't bother with even buying ram. keep your original stuff.

looks like a lot of wasted money to me. you have a psu i assume? all you need are a motherboard a cpu and a gpu.... here is an alternative which will likely kill that build.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($209.00 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S 55.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($49.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($144.99 @ Microcenter)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($82.95 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB...
If I were in your shoes I would re-use your ram in a 4x2GB (8GB total). No game will stress the RAM too much for the next couple of years.

I would get an Intel 4770K and an Asus Z87-A board (SLI capable - mobo+cpu around $500).

I would get a GTX 770 or 780 (another $500-ish depending). Get another one as an upgrade when you can afford it.

Pick up a 2x8GB or 4x4GB RAM kit some time in the future. You won't need it now. This is your lowest priority.

This will be a great upgrade and will keep you out of trouble.

What kind of PSU do you currently have?

I went with the i5 and SSD mostly because you won't really notice the jump from nehelam to haswell WITHOUT an ssd. The i5 also lets me get you a 780. considering there is maybe an 8% difference in performance even in FULLY threaded games between an i5 and i7, i think the 780 will more then make up for it. Furthermore, no one really needs an i7. I gave you a good cpu cooler as well in the event you want to overclock your haswell... or you get a "bad" one which has temp issues. Either way you'll thank me for it.

I have a Corsair TW850w PSU, I figured this would suffice, I also have enough drives ( 1tb & 2tb WD HDs, 60gb SSD (OS) 30gb SSD (Star Citizen) and HAF-922 case, didn't think those needed changing. I also have a brand new H60 cooler.

glad to see you have some SSDs... you didn't meantion any; anyway you could knock the cpu cooler and ssd off the build i put up there... save yourself about $150; use that cash to get yourself a 2nd 1080p monitor. fun stuff like that.

I was thinking of getting that x55 Rhino for Star Citizen, could use it towards that. Thanks for the info, really helped me and shed some light.

I just read that Star Citizen will actually be making use of 8/12 threads, how big of an impact will that have vs the GPU difference?
