Looking for a quick reminder for rebuilding a machine from 98 to win2k ummm as for fdisk and all that any sites I can get a summary of just the steps taken in rebuiling a machine reformatting the drive etc..... thanks guys lata

Boot with a boot disk that will bring you to a DOS prompt.
Type FDISK to get into the program and manage your partitions (e.g. create new, delete, split up, etc.)
Format your new partitions.
Install Windows.

Install Windows: just run winnt.exe in the i386 directory (make sure you run smartdrv.exe off the 98/DOS boot floppy)

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

And yet another opinion:

Create a boot disk.

Change the first bootable device in the BIOS to A, or the floppy drive, the second to CD-ROM, and the third to C, or IDE 0. Save your changes and exit.

Partition the drive with FDISK.

Take the boot disk out of the floppy drive after exiting FDISK, and place the Win2K installation CD in the CD-ROM. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to exit FDISK and reboot.

The computer will boot from the CD-ROM, and begin the installation of Windows automatically.

Follow the onscreen instructions to install Win2K on the first, active partition. The CD will allow you to format the partition during the installation.

When the operating system has been installed, restart, and enter the BIOS again. Change the first bootable device to IDE 0. Save and exit.

Once back in Windows, right-click on any partitions assigned a drive letter that have not yet been formatted, go to Properties, and choose FORMAT. Select the file system for each partition. I suggest starting off with FAT32 for all partitions, and then convert the file system to NTFS, if you so desire.

After creating a connection to your ISP, patch the operating system from Windows Update. Install DirectX 8.1. Install the latest chipset drivers. Install Service Pack 2. Install the latest drivers for all devices, leaving the video card for last, to avoid conflicts.

The display adapter should first be installed as Standard VGA, and then manually upgraded with the newest video card drivers. The drivers should be extracted into a folder. Do not use the installation launcher in a driver set ... it is often corrupted, and will cause problems when rebooting the computer.

Now ... install and patch your personal third party programs. Adjust the Services configuration.

Thoroughly scan all hard drives and defrag. Set the Startup and Recover settings under My Computer\Properties\Advanced. Choose (none) for the Write Debugging Information, and clear the check box for Automatically Restart.

Go to bed! Pray a little. Boot up, and if everything seems to be functional in the morning, check the Event Viewer for errors. (My Computer\Manage\Event Viewer ... Application and System logs. If you are error-free, do some tweaking.

Everything Toejam said, except.. I just boot off the CD and let Win2K repartition itself in the first place. It gives you the option right there and I've never had a problem with it. I don't exactly see the point of booting off of a floppy first, unless the machine is too old to suppport CDrom booting.

I think it's easier to partition from DOS, personally. And if you use the installation CD to partition the drive and choose FAT32 as the file system, you might run into the 32GB limitation, depending on the capacity of the drive.

Of course, this doesn't matter if you choose NTFS. But, for example, perhaps you'd like to dual-boot operating systems, and would rather convert a partition to NTFS later on, or even keep FAT32 for the partitions so that all are visible from either Win2K/WinXP and Win9x for easier file transfers, or to share the virtual memory. Then partitioning from DOS before installing any version of an operating system might be a better choice.

Also, occasionally, people have difficulty installing an operating system from a CD-ROM because of some kind of error or the age of the system, as you mentioned, and it's best done with boot floppies. In that scenario, multi-partitioning in advance is a necessity, instead of a luxury.

Finally, again, with older systems, a BIOS might not support a larger hard drive. One of the workarounds is to use a disk utility from the manufacturer to partition the disk, so all the free space is available and recognized. This also would be done from DOS, before the operating system installation.

DOS is not quite dead, and can be useful in certain situations, and this is one of them.
