Question RE gaming damaging the HDD

So my dad just brought a gaming PC to replace our old one (refurbished office pc from mid 2000's), because the hard drive was damaged and we could no longer access our files. Apparently the guy at the repair shop said this was due to overuse. My dad now refuses to allow games on the GAMING PC because it will 'damage the HDD'. Would gaming cause any signifigant increase in wear to the HDD, or is he overreacting?
