Hello,

So I originally had Windows 7 installed on my PC. I still have the Windows 7 OEM Disks. Since then I upgraded to Windows 10. I am planning on doing a fresh install of Windows 10. I have heard that you don't need a windows 10 key since it hardware locks onto your MOBO.

So essentially, I was wondering what would be the best way to do this? I was thinking that I could create a win 10 installer on USB and then proceed with formatting my drives and then proceed to install it.

The only thing I am unsure of is the Window's 10 key. Is it true that I won't need it? Will I run into any issues with this plan?

Thanks!

Solution
if you installed win7 then upgraded to 10 and it activated then yes.

All you have to do is boot from a win10 flash drive / dvd. When you get to windows setup delete all partitions. Install windows

When it asks for the key click on skip. It'll activate when you get online

You can get the latest Win10 ISO with the mediacreation tool. Then use rufus to put it on a flash drive

If your mobo has a UEFI BIOS select GPT in Rufus add ISO then start

When it finishes reboot change the bootdisk to the flash drive / boot from it

You dont have to sign into your MS account. On the other PC here, once I reinstall win10 and it's online it's activated. I havent even signed into my MS account

When you sign in to your microsoft account it will activate.

Go to the microsoft site and get the windows 10 media creation tool. For a complete fresh install after upgrading, this is the easiest way IMO.

You can also go into the recovery options and do a reinstall from there without any disc. Not sure how well that works from an old upgraded install but it should still work.

BTW there is absolutely no need to get the ISO and manually put it on the USB. The media creation tool does it all automatically.
