Thanks

If it is USB 2 it will say Enhanced in the Device Manager.

Control Panel
System
Hardware tab
Device Manager button

Open device manager: Right click My Computer | Properties | Hardware |
Device Manager. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section.
One should include the words, "Enhanced Host Controller". Double click
it, click on Driver, Driver Details. one of the drivers should be
usbehci.sys. Note you could have a mixture - some USB1 and some USB2.

I wonder.

Only some of mine say Enhanced in D.M. I asked Acer tech support
about that, and they said all my ports are USB2, that they haven't
used anything else for some months since before my computer was made.

I've tried USB2 devices in all my ports and I don't get the message
"this device would run better in a hi-speed port", so I think Acer
are telling the truth. Maybe Windows isn't 100% accurate in reporting
USB type in D.M.?

Hello Rock
Very sorry to hi-jack this post, hugh.
That is interesting - I have 8(eight) USB ports.
2 front, four in a group on back half way up and two in line along bottom at
rear.
In D.Manager they show up as following;
Intel 8280 1EB USB UNIV HOST CONT - 24D2
ditto - 24D4
ditto - 24D7
ditto - 24DE
USB2 Enhanced Host Con- 24DD
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
In the Props/driver files, (for the enhanced)details show five entries, the
first being the one you mentioned to the poster Hugh.
I had big probs trying to get a digicam added - after updates etc I had
success but only two ports recognised the cam. The Sony instruction book
says the cam is compliant with 'Hi-speed USB(usb2)'.
I also was given to understand all 8 usb's were USB2.
Are they - why did cam only work on 2.
Why are there five of these entries and not eight?
Your wisdom on this matter would be much appreciated

You were right - best not to hijack a thread. Post a new one with your
question.

One alternative is to read the documentation that comes with the PC or
motherboard. That tells if capable, and if there are just a limited number
of ports that do so. But not always, especially PCs regarding a limited
number of ports, not all of them.

The other is to enable USB and USB enhanced in the bios. Assure that those
drivers are installed in XP. You can waste your time in device mangler.
But won't indicate which are USB 2.0 capable if not all of the ports. A
trial USB 2.0 device is the only way. An external, SELF-POWERED, hard drive
w/USB 2.0 capability timing the data movement on a large file or group of
files copying seems to be the best alternative. A true working USB 2.0 port
will be much faster. Proof's in the pudding, not on the table.

Hello Lil Dave
Thank you for the reply - I am afraid that my poor knowledge of
computers(hence my post-script)at the present is such that I keep away from
Registry and Bios.
I do however have some idea what you are saying.
This comp was built to me specs(soley flightsim)and the odd email of course.
My mobo diag(MSI 865PE Neo2-P) shows just two usb2 on front panel - it says
it supports 8, 4 front & 4 rear. I have 2 front. 2 bottom rear and 4 mid
way up also rear.
I am afraid I not longer talk to the builder.
If I rgt click on each of the entries in Dev Manager, all show drivers etc.
I recently checked to ensure all up to date.
Many thanks for your reply

Sorry, I didn't mean it as a rap on the knucles, just a friendly
reminder. It's best not to post onto another thread with a different
question. That way more people see it.
