Re-usage of Galaxy S6

Hello, I have just ordered the new S8 and don't plan on selling or trading in my S6. Once I transfer my service over to my S8, can I still use my S6 on my home network to connect to do things like connecting to wifi and surfing the internet and playing and casting movies to my t.v??

Yup. On wifi it will still work as it did before. Set it up with google voice and you can make calls with it too. You can also use it as a portable drive if you want as well.

I have also wanted to try rooting my device and unlocking the bootloader. can I also do this with my S6 with no network service?

I would assume so. I have little direct knowledge of this though.
