read stored emails in Windows 10

How do I read emails saved to an external hard drive in Windows 10?

I simply saved them to the hard drive from windows mail (Vista).

And now you're running Windows 10? I assume you are since you posted in the Windows 10 forum, although you left out that detail. If so, you can use Windows Live Mail. Thunderbird probably would work as well.
