reading 700 MB CDs

I have some 700 MB video files currently residing on CDs that I want to
put on DVDs so I can simplify my storage needs.

I used to be able to read these on this machine but now they all give me
"CRC errors" in the last 10 seconds of the copy process.

They play fine, and I can copy them in Linux with no problems, but when
I boot the machine to Win2K, then I get errors even with the same
reader. I can also copy them on a new laptop running XP with no
problems.

Is there some known issue affecting Win2K that I'm in the dark about?

Since CDs read from the hub out, maybe you're experiencing wobbling problems.
Try copying at a lower speed, or try a different CD drive.

Well, the same drive reads the CD if I boot the PC to a non-Windows OS, so I'm
assuming there's some driver issue on my machine, but I could be wrong.

How do I copy at a lower speed? I use Windows Explorer and drag the file between
folders.

Dunno. Maybe Windows puts some arbitrary limit on it, or maybe it reports
the errors differently. Why do you think the file is on the CD correctly?

CD Speed might work. http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

Like I said, I can read the CDs just fine in an XP laptop and also on the desktop
machine if I reboot it to Linux. Therefore it seems logical that the files are OK and
that the issue is with my Win2K installation.

Obviously I have acceptable workarounds, but I want to fix whatever is wrong with
Win2K.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Keith

Did you apply any Windows Update disasters recently?

A couple of them are REALLY screwed up...
