Reading .dat files

How do you read .dat files when the computer says there is no programme to open it?

What were they created with? Many applications create something called .dat

Notepad or Notepad++ might open them.

.dat extensions is just a txt file, open it with notepad but consider the size of the file first, anything over 8mb might require wordpad or even Microsoft Word to open it, Notepad is basic text file program, anything over 16mb then it struggles and may no longer respond.
