Hi there,

I have a 1TB external drive (NTFS formated) connected to my router (Netgear R6300v2). I can access the drive as a network drive from all PCs over WiFi without any problems. - but I can't access the drive as a media server.

There are only very few options you can change in the setup: Both options "activate media server" and "activate TiVo support" are activated, the scan is set to automatic (well you can't click anything else there) and I have given the media server a name. It is visible on all the devices - PS3, Yamaha network player, Genie app on andriod phone, PCs,.... --> but NO device can access it! One says "access denied" the other one says "no files" windows says "connection was not accepted" etc... It's very annoying as it used to work fine before.

It's definately a problem of the router and not of any device as no device can open the media server. I hardly changed any settings of the router - only name of the server, SID and so on. I have already restored the router to factory settings but it is the same thing then! "ReadyDLNA" is visible on every device but access is denied.

I had DDWRT running on the router before and there the NAS worked fine. I changed back to the Netgear firmware though as the DDWRT didn't manage the beam forming (which really increases speed a lot)

The firmware doesn't allow many changes and setups so I really don't know what to change there. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

Thank you for your help!

to create a successful DLNA connection there is many important aspects must be met, like The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) feature it should be enabled to be able to access local host resources or devices, check if it's enabled or try to disable and re-enable, also check if your HDD is listed in the UPnP list (if there is a UPnP list in Netgear's firmware).

Thank you DON!

Yes UPnP is turned on but there is no list.
I have tried it with a USB stick and it worked. I have then plugged the external disk into my computer and have deleted the folder (.ReadyDLNA). Hy hopes were that it scannes the disk again and creates a new folder.

This worked in so far as all my devices can no access the media server again. The problem is still not completely solved however, as now it does not show me all the folders and no music and no videos. Only photos are shown correctly.

Is it possible that the R6300v2 only can process a certain amount of data? I have 400GB on the harddisc now - maybe the router can't process that amount of media data???

Thank you,

Florian

I was able to determine the problem - for those who maybe have the same issue. Netgear routers can only handle 25.000 media files. As I have more than 25.000 photos on the disc plus music plus films it just couldn't process it.

Can anyone suggest a better router than the R6300v2?

Thanks!
