Just got the Phenom II x4 955. About to put together, but need to know if I should apply thermal paste before laying the heatsink. The directions say there is some already on it, but don't know if it will be sufficient.

Also, do I have to get one of those static wrist- straps, or is there another way to not fry everything. My entire apartment has carpeting.

I know these are total noob questions, but I never built anything before, and dont want to f it up.

Thanks a lot!!

When I build systems I don't use a static strap. I always touch the case or power supply before touching any of the components. This will equal the charge. If you're still leery then get a strap.

As for the thermal paste, the one that comes on the stock heatsink will suffice for normal use. If you plan to overclock then you will need to get a better heatsink and better paste like Arctic Silver.

Thanks for that advice, sounds good to me. Now the question is, can I overclock at all with this stock heatsink, or should I just leave it alone? I am not spending any more cash (totally broke now). I read in a few places that I can just bump it up a little to make this equal to the 965. If that is too risky, then I'll just not bother messing around at all.

Thanks again!!

As - jonpaul said you'll be fine OCing on the stock heatsink to the 965 level (that is only a 200Mhz. or a 1x increment to the CPU multiplier so should not generate too much additional heat ! (besides AMD probably uses the same stock Heatsink\fan for both the 965 and 955 in the first place)
