I am running an older system:

Athlon 950
GeForce 3 Ti500
512Mb RAM

Is it possible to get HL2 running smooth enough to play on this system, with
quality settings down etc?

TY

Not really, no. I initially tried running it with an Athlon 1200, same RAM,
better graphics card, and it wasn't too great.

Your CPU is way below the minimum spec, and will impair gameplay
seriously. Loading times will reach 3 minutes, and you will not get
smooth gameplay ever.

You should really consider buying a low-price Socket 754 mainboard and
an Athlon64 2800+, and of course new PC3200 memory. This is the most
cost-effective upgrade.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I DL-ed the demo and it is too choppy to be fun as you predicted.

Roughly how much would I be looking at for the above, with 512Mb of RAM?

I played HL2 comfortably well on GeForce 3 Ti200 and it was perfectly fine
in 800*600 mode. By the way the rest of the machine spec was a little
better, P4 2.4GHz 533FSB, 512 MB DDR 2700 RAM.

On my better Spec and Graphics card (9800XT) machine the eye candy and
resolution could be turned up to max, but in my opinion HL2 scaled well for
the old Geforce 3 baby!

Well, I live in Norway, and up here you would get away with 2225 NOK for
the above, including CPU fan. That is 356 american dollars or 272 euros.
