If that is beginning to spike then the sectors on your HDD are going bad.
Replace the drive.
Seriously, don't wait to do the backup. This thing could be dead tomorrow....

I am scanning this hard drive right now. So far, It shows one red dot, but please note, there are no damaged blocks so far, so is that red dot fixable by itself?
I have used this HD mainly as a buffer for downing kid-not-friendly movies, so data inside are not important, but I want to get back into downloading more, so want to check the integrity of it first.

I personally would replace the drive.

after the test, I got 8 counts on a new pending sector. the test only shows one red dot.
replace it while it's still working is for rich people. I am so broken that I have eaten in McDonald's for years.
how serious is.my 500g Seagate hard drive? maybe I can mask out that section using partitions?
I really wouldn't trash her even if I win a lottery or anything because there are so many good memories I have with her.
