really need help with hdmi resolution

hey everyone, i have GTX 260 Core 216 and a 26" LCD HDTV. my gpu came with dvi to hdmi adapter and i would like to use the hdtv as my monitor but i cant find a resolution that fits the screen. it says the native resolution is 19x10 but when i switch to it the tv flashes the no signal box that jumps around on the screen. ive tried every resolution and none fit the screen correctly. some fit but it looks all big like when you first install a gpu without drivers. also my tv isnt displaying it full screen, it reduced to a rectangle and i cant get it to stretch to fit the screen. i have the latest nvidia drivers and the card is brand new. it works fine if i use the dvi to vga adapter but then the resolution isnt as high the highest that goes is 13x7. so if anyone could help its greatly appreciated. i would really like to game on this hdtv. its 26" compared to my 19"monitor. oh and the tv is 720p.

To stretch the rectangle to fit the screen adjust your overscan in the video driver control. Also check to make sure that your OS is properly detecting the display type.

the highest your monitor will display (at its best quality) is 720p, as thats it native resolution.

you might get it to display 1080i, or1080p from the pc, and if it does, it will be down converted to fit the display.

as mentioned, you may need to use an overscan adjustment/control in the drivers to fill the screen.

btw, 720p is 1280x720 in pc terms. and 1080i(p) is 1920x1080 in pc terms.

A 720p hdtv resolution, with a 19x10 screen is 1368x720. The 720 is the vertical resolution. You need a 1080p hdtv for what you tried. That would be 2052x1080.

Taken from wikipedia ... 720p has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, a vertical resolution of 720 pixels and a horizontal resolution of 1280 pixels for a total of 921,600 pixels.

So according to this your tv's native res should be 1280*720. But almost all 720p tv's have a resolution of 1360*768. See if you have either choice in your display settings.

thanks everyone for your input but while you guys were helping, i was messing around in the nvidia control panel and i cant get a better resolution with the dvi to hdmi than i do with dvi to vga. so now my next question is, is the image quality of vga worse than dvi? will i see a difference between my monitor (dvi) and the hdtv (vga)? if so then i ll go back to my monitor but if its not a huge difference then ill stick with the hdtv. thanks for any info in advanced.

If you have a short, good-quality VGA cable then you shouldn't see much difference between VGA and DVI. It sounds like your VGA only went to the native rez of the display, so you don't want your DVI-HDMI to go higher than that anyway. Aim for 720p or 768p with that size HDTV.

Use the VGA connection, it'll be the same unless displaying HDCP content. One advantage, you shouldn't have to worry about overscan through the VGA/D-sub input.

Then use whatever the pixel correct native res is;
either 1280x720 or 1366x768

it should be listed in your TVs specs or in the Owner's manual.

ok thanks guys your help was great, ill stick to the tv and actually i get better frame rates in every game ive tried. which seems weird because the tv is 7 inches bigger than the monitor i have but its because the lower resolution. but now i can play crysis on all very high settings and never drop below 37 fps with 2xAA. i love it.

yer tv's res is most likely 1366x768
