Mostly a gaming PC.
Some music or video editing.
Built to last with no upgrades for 3 years.
Stable, reliable & compatable.
Ability to mildly overclock.
Using XP for at least 1 more year.

Everything is off of NewEgg. My choices were based on reviews both here and there.

MOBO - GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813128017
Comments - Easy to overclock and I discovered trick on how to get in and change memory voltage settings above 1.8V(Press CRTL-F1 b4 going into intelligent tweaker). Don't need SLI. Price $108.

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819115003
Comments - I know that the E6400 will overclock easily for $100 less but so will this one and I need it to scale out over 3 years. Price $316

Memory - I am really stuck here. I want 2 Gig but not sure what brand or if I want 667 or 800. Again I am looking for something stable and reliable that is fairly forgiving on OC'ing and is a good value but not cheap. $225?

GPU - eVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814130071
Comments: Seems to be a good balance between needs and cost. Since no upgrade for 3 years, need the DX10. Not as good as GTX but should be more than adequate for games I play and big cost savings over GTX. Price - $369

HDD - 2X Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822148140
Comments: I want to run as RAID 1 cause I'm tired of doing backups. I'll image it every so often instead. Later on if I want I can switch to RAID 0 and use external drive for data backups. Price for both - $180.

Case - COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel, SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811119068
Comments: Big question here is will the 8800 GTS fit without problems or modifications. If anyone could comment on this. Much appreciated. Price - $40

PSU - HIPER HPU-4K580-MS ATX12V v2.2 580W Power Supply 100 - 120V
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817128002
Comments: This is an item I revised based on feedback - Price $90

CD/DVD Player - LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM ATAPI/E-IDE DVD-ROM
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827106027
Comments: Great price and good reviews. Price - $18

CD/DVD Burner - LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD Burner with Replaceable White Front Panel.
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827106046
Comments: Decent reviews. Seems to do it all. SATA. Price - $37

FDD - NEC Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Model FD1231H-302
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16821152005
$7

Cooling:

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - $6

Cooling - Thermaltake CL-P0114 CPU Cooler with Heatsink
Thermaltake CL-P0114 CPU Cooler with Heatsink
or
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835186134
Comment: Have seen where for this set up really don't need after market coolers for mild OC. I will prolly wait on this and watch my temps. $45

Total Price: $1441 without Cooler. If anyone can see where to shave dollors off this without sacrificing scalability or quality, let me know.
