I feel your pain. I got the Realm down message while muling not a
small amount of stuff. Plus it has been a half hour and I still cannot
get on.

Gateway, chat and games are handled by different servers, so in a lot
of cases you can play merrily on a game server while other people have
trouble getting a connection to a gateway. Both instances of your game
build up a separate connection to Bnet, and if one of them times out
completely then it might be some kind of protection that doesn't allow
you to login again for some minutes. If you had taken the second
instance out of the game and had tried to login with that you probably
would have received a "realm down" message for that one too.

If you get a new IP from your ISP every time you reconnect you could
try that. On the other hand, Europe has been really bad for two days
with a lot of failed connection attempts, so you could be suffering
from that too.

Probably an IP block from BNet. This is common when you leave and
rejoin a game while going from one character, and/or account to
another. BNet has a program that detects bots and bans them for a
period of time. Unfortunately, moving things from one character to
another can trigger the program because you're acting like a bot.

From what I understand, the IP blocks get longer and longer the more
times you trigger them. They start with a couple of minutes and
eventually can last as long as two days. I just happen to be on the
two day list even though I never have used a bot. I'm an item
collector and do a lot of muling. Now I don't even get a Realm Down,
I can't connect at all.

Supposedly, if you just go very slowly from one character to another,
it will be less likely to trigger the IP block.
