Having played only an hour or so of the original 16bit slide-show myst
before moving on, I was interested to try this version that promised freedom
of movement and higher quality.

Once the WindowsXP issues were sorted, patched, and settings tweaked to
1280x1024x32 with 4xFSAA and 8xAA (2.4ghz athlonxp + 9700pro), the game is
simply astounding to look at. I see no signs of age: it plays just like an
FPS (circle strafing!!) , the music and sound effects are wonderful.

I know essentially nothing of the story, so all the mystery is there as
well.

Highly recommended!!

Do you know anywhere online (UK) that I can get hold of this? Most game
stores don't stock it anymore...

One of the Amazon sellers is selling them for a reasonable
price (not linked with me in any way).

Many UK stores never DID seem to stock the thing, even when it came out. At
least, not in my area, and I looked for it everywhere when it was supposed
to come out. (Though several totally contradictory release dates didn't
help the search) I finally bought my copy on Amazon a few days ago - it's
beautiful alright, but not terribly reliable technically - I still can't get
it to run properly without the odd hideous texture glitch now and then, the
patch refuses to install on this version, and it can also crash on rare
occasions.

The Rime age was beautiful, but disappointingly short - it's only got two
puzzles, one of which takes approximately fifteen seconds to solve after
first laying eyes on it - it's almost insultingly easy after all the
difficult puzzles in the original ages, though it does have some elegance to
it. The other is basically an enter-the-combination puzzle, not difficult
either (legend has it you can get a second result out of the puzzle, but I
haven't managed that yet). One thing I was impressed with was the way the
Rime age access was integrated into Myst island - almost seamless, except
they had to add a rather obviously not-previously-present second control
button at one point.
