Hey there,

So I've finally got around to connecting my sound system to my pc. 5.1, through optical on my motherboard, Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H (Windows 10 64bit OS). When I went to check my audio panel, there was nothing there to select audio channels, or even do a speaker test. I updated the driver restarted and checked again, nope, nothing.

Any ideas?

Update: I have a Sony STR-K900 (i believe the newer version of this model is now called HTDDW900 this is a 6.1, mine is a 5.1), it has the Dolby Digital and DTS logos on it so I'm pretty sure I can do 5.1 through optical.

Thanks!

Hi, after much searching I've come to the conclusion that Optical does not support 5.1 uncompressed, only when an audio/video file has DTS or Dolby encoding. I've tested this in VLC player by enabling DirectX audio module (click tools > preferences > audio > Output Module) and tick the box SPDIF to ON and setting the Dolby option to ON.

I now get 5.1 surround sound with the movies I have that are DTS.

Thanks for anyone who was considering answering.
