Reboot mutes speakers in vista

When my Acer laptop with Vista boots, the speakers are muted - it wasn't always so. How do I change this setting so that it boots unmuted?

Try re-installing the driver via acer's support site and see if that resets the sound card. What sort of sound card/integrated sound is in it?
