Built a PC a few years back with $1500 budget... should I hold off and rebuild or should I upgrade GPU and stick in 16GB+ of ram? Link to the build:

If gaming @ 1080p, you can just buy a gtx 1060 6gb or 1070 and you are done, your CPU is still decent :) However, if you are heavy gamer for AAA games, get latest coffee lake I7-8700K, CPU 380, MB ~150+, RAM 16gb ~ 150 and the new gpu :) It is all about need, does pc satisfy your need? If so, no need to upgrade. If you want best, take the 2nd option :)

The build looks good, if it hasn't been done already I would consider some CPU/GPU overclocking to get a bit more performance if needed. Also adding in a matching 2x4gb set of RAM would be fine as well since you have the additional slots.

Do you think if I kept the same old processor but upgraded GPU and RAM it would be bottlenecked? And should I get a better cooling setup and just overclock CPU and GPU?

GPU is kinda old, you don’t think I should update to a better card?

Yea you could, what card are you thinking of getting? A GTX 1070 ti (coming out in a couple of weeks) would be a nice upgrade. Also I would consider getting a used 4790K if you can find one for cheap.

My budget won’t allow me to upgrade both, I’m debating whether or not to upgrade GPU or just wait a year and build a kick ass computer. In the past I’ve always found that i5 processors are more than sufficient enough for my purposes: gaming and school work. Do you think I absolutely need to update the CPU as well? And why to an i7?

Do you think I could get by with that card I want to get, and overclocking my current CPU with minimal bottlenecking?

If the i5 is sufficient for your needs then forget the i7 but I would pass on the GTX 1060 as I don't think it's a worthwhile upgrade over your 780. I would consider a 1070 or better and as far as the CPU holding it back I doubt you'll have issues, especially if you overclock it.

if you can wait a year or so and build a kickass computer, i would go with this option, but you upgrade only the GPU now to a 1060 or a 1070...1070 better for future proof and next year just upgrade the rest (mobo, cpu, ram).

you should be totally fine with either the 1060 or the 1070
