Rebuilding ASUS CG5275 with my kids, 9 and 11

I have a bad hard drive on an older Asus desktop. We replaced it as family desktop and now that my kids are older and using our computer more we want to resurrect it and put bells on it.
I have never done a computer build. Have been reading some and wonder:
Do I have to replace the motherboard?
Looked at Userbenchmark to compare build parts and costs, I figure I am willing to put $1000 into it, will the existing motherboard be worth reusing or start over?

New graphics card Nvidia 1060 or 1070
16GB Ram 2x8GB or reuse existing?
Power? /Cooling?
Solid state drive Samsung 970 Evo 500GB
CPU Intel I7 maybe?

Any helpful tips, pointers, compatability issues?

Thanks in advance, and I know this is such a newb question list, sorry.

Solution
on the old pc your better off putting in a low end gpu if it does not have one just to help it play some games. for the money dont rebuild it it too old the newer cpu out there are a lot faster.
look at an i5 8400 and a b/g intel mb.
wait for next nvida gpu dropping in july.
use a seasonic focus power supply.
the old pc still good for web/word.

The b/g intel mb...is new intel motherboard that fits the new I5 8400 CPU? I believe the existing is a micro ATX, LGA 1150 Cpu socket.
Will a new intel motehrboard fit in the ASUS case?

Agreed on don't go too crazy with this old thing. Can I reuse the RAM, not sure whats there? It does have a video card I imagine, the only thing not working was the failing hard drive. I have not opened it up yet, that could be informative!

Thanks for the input.

I think this might make it more exciting--just start from scratch and build a computer!
