Rebuilding my computer, help please!

Hello, this christmas season, i am looking to build up my computer. I basically have a Dell computer with new hard drive, video card, and power supply. I want to upgrade my CPU, mobo, and case. Right now i have a toxic sapphire 6870 video card, a rosewill value 2 power supply (model # rv2-700), and a seagate barracuda hard drive, and an Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93 Ghz. I do not know about my motherboard or RAM, but if you tell me how to find those out, i will provide you with the info. So if you could please recommend a case, mobo, and CPU, that would be great. Also, my computer sometimes overheats during hardcore gaming sessions and shuts off, how can i fix this?

Well you do need to specify a bit more...
1) Is this computer solely for gaming and light usage like web browsing and typing?
2) Budget, very important (for everything)
3) What kind of case do you want? Planning on Water cooling or air cooling?
4)AMD or Intel Build? (Intel is a better choice in gaming).

Anyways, now to my opinions/preferences. I believe the i7 870 is still a respectable processor. For your overheating issues, a CPU cooler will fix the CPU temperatures and good airflow will help reduce all other component temperatures.

This is for gaming and light surfing. Obviously school work here and there but nothing else. The budget is about $150 for the case, ~$300 for CPU and ~$150 for Mobo. We're going crazy this year since im turning 18. I am planning on air cooling but if you could also include a water cooled suggestion. I am willing to adjust the prices. Also, Intel build all the way.

I mean at the most for your purposes, I would recommend the 3570k, but that's not quite a good leap on the hierarchy chart...you could keep the i7 870. If you are determined to replace it, let me know. We already know what processor I have recommended at this point but its not fully worth it. You could also wait until the Haswell series are released.

Yea, maybe i will keep it then. I just wanted to go all out this year since my parents are willing spend more because I'm turning 18 haha. (Christmas and Birthday will be combined) But i do see what you are saying. Also, what about mobo and a good case?

They both will tell you your motherboard so just choose one (though nothing wrong with installing both, but at the end of the day they should display the same thing, so one will suffice).

Keep the cpu, run the stock cpu cooler until you sell the 6870 to get an aftermarket cpu cooler and if you dont have at least 8 gb of ddr3 ram, for that too.

Yeah, pretty beast setup... Skimp on the case if you need to, keep your current mobo if it has a 2.0 x 16 PCIE slot and works fine also ( Just make sure it lets you overclock the cpu).

+1 on a better PSU.

A cooler for your CPU will cost as little as $30. It's just down to checking whether or not you need a new motherboard...if your current one supports SATA 2, PCIe 2.0 and DDR3 RAM, then you're OK. SATA 3 would be better but not essential. The best thing to upgrade is the GPU and RAM (unless you have at least 4GB right now). You can get some good cases...the Corsair range are generally great for gaming, and Silverstone are worth a look too.

Either way the power supplies Maxalge and I have recommended should be more than enough for a single video card. You may be able to crossfire lower end graphics card but for higher end you generally want 750 watt + to be on the safe side.

Now to address the CPU overheating issues, go and buy the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, should fix up your overheating issue.
