Receive fax won't allow phone calls

I set up XP's fax to send and receive using my dial-up modem not my
broadband. I can send and receive with no problem. However, with "Receive"
enabled phone calls come through as unsuccessful faxes. In order to receive
phone calls I have to disable "Receive". I have a fax/phone combined and
wonder if this is the problem.

XP cannot distinguish between an incoming phone and incoming fax call so it
very much depends on the modem you have installed.
