My in-laws computer is dying (nearly 10 years old), so wife told me to build them a new one.

All they do is internet surf and read email. Thus, an older cpu that runs on DDR3 would be cheap and easy. Obviously overclocking is pointless.

So.... what do yall recommend?

Yeah, a cheap SSD is a given. 4 gigs of RAM, cheap mobo and case.... call it a day.

That 6100 is on Newegg for $115.26... that's exactly the price I was thinking. Thank you.

Actually, the G4560 (essentially a i3-7100, slightly updated architecture, but -200 MHz) is only $54 on Newegg. That's a heck of a price for a usable 2c/4t processor.

I built my father an i3-6100 system about 2 years ago and it's a zippy little thing.

You may have trouble finding a Skylake DDR3L motherboard still sold. There were a few, but they weren't very common. Nonetheless, the savings on a processor between the two should help pay for the difference between DDR3L and DDR4. I'd even splurge a little bit (especially if they browse in Chrome) and toss in 8 GB. RAM doesn't go as far as it used to when you start opening up tabs.

if there not gamers and just old people surfing the web. look on newegg/micro center for clearance pc. it save you 100.00 just on buying the os and the pc will have a warranty and support from the vendor (dell or hp). with a 10 year old pc there going to need a new monitor unless it been replaced. older ones are vga. newer pc use dvi and hdmi ports. and use digitail outputs. a few months ago i swapped out a working 22 led screen i had for year for a newer ips unit from asus boy is the newer screen white and readable for us old farts.
