Recomended PSU for both a 980 GTX and a R9 380 (Current PSU's may be unsafe?)

Hello,

So, upon browsing around, I learned that when I first built my PC and my previous PC, that my choice to go relatively cheap on PSU's may have been a terrible choice. My most recent one is the worst offender from what I can tell, as its a XION, and I have read nothing but bad bad things with them... and I am currently ordering a new 980 GTX that would be running off from said XION:

I didn't find any XION's on the PSU tier list, which probably isn't a good sign, and every discussion I saw was very negative. Is that one even remotely safe for me to be using going forward? It is currently just over 2 years old. I don't know if there are ANY good XION's out there though, hah.

If it is unsafe, what wattage should I be looking at for a 980 GTX (factory OC) + 4770k, leaving room to possibly OC further later on? Its fairly unlikely that I will ever SLi it, but, if I did, what rating should I be looking at then? The main reason I went w/ the XION was due to having plenty of watts to Xfire / SLi if I chose to, while still being inexpensive. I am probably going to browse tier 2 PSU's of the rec. wattage, but if I can nab a tier 1 at a good price, ill of course do that.

The 2nd PSU in question is a little less of a concern as it is a better brand it seems, its a Rosewill Xtreme Series RX950-S-B 950W Continuous @40°C :

This one is, however, older. It currently is, approaching the 6 yr mark I believe, and the lady just used it to build a new PC around. Now, if it is a safe PSU that if / when it dies it won't be frying her PC, I will hold off replacing it till needed as its plenty of juice. But, if it is also a low quality that may fry her comp, let me know, so I can replace it, too. This PSU powers a R9 380 + an i5... 6400? I want to say. Being an older model, I didn't see this in the current PSU tiers either, but I am taking a guess that, being made by Rosewill, its of a better quality (tier 2ish?)

Appreciate any and all feedback, wish I wouldve done more research on the PSU's in the first place, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. I read the newegg reviews, but thats hardly good researching :)

For the record, if the PSU's (Both the XION and the Rosewill) are reasonably safe than I probably will hold off on replacing, simply because the video card itself was an unexpected expense as is, and I really don't have the money at the moment after I buy the GTX.

My biggest concern is that the XION is capable of frying my new toy, as XIONs do not seem very well liked. I am hoping that maybe its at least a moderate exception to that rule, and at least has some safety to it.... I am digging around online as I type, trying to find more on it myself, just like to get additional feedback if at all possible! Thanks all.

Well a good 750W power supply could run the two GTX 980's, but I would go with the extra head room, around 850W mark. I personally would upgrade the XION PSU.

Brands that I Trust for Power supplies:

  • Corsair
    Silverstone
    EVGA
    Fractial Design
    NZXT
    SeaSonic
    CoolerMaster

All of those should be Good with a 850W maybe more if your budget allows leaving you enough headroom for the future.

For the R9 380 system Roswell do not seem like a bad brand, but if you ever did want to upgrade in the future I would go with a 600W PSU (500W would do, but extra headroom is always nice)

Also PSU's genrally use less power at around 60% to 80% load, so making them more efficient

Good luck

Hmm. Well, currently the best price to quality product I have crossed that still has potential to run 2 980's in the future if I desired, is this EVGA

Pretty sure it falls under tier 2, and the price isnt too shabby esp for 750w. Unless I find something I like better and can get cheaper, I am leaning towards that one for the 980. It should be enough to run 2 980's if I ever chose to, correct? I know it lacks the extra headroom, but I am trying to remain in lower cost since I don't really have the money as is.

Thanks for the reply :)
