recommend components for diy nas

Hello,
recently my old netgear nas died leaving 4 disks behind. I briefly checked the internet for some new NAS that would hold them but I dont realy want to invest 500€ into it. As all I want from my NAS is to be able to stream through DLNA, access it from windows computers(and android devices) in network(1gbps) and to be relativly power efficient I was thinking about building my own. I was checking google for some rapsberry pi builds but tbh I dont realy know about rapsberry pi possibilities (I just know it exists). I dont need any webserver nor transcoding, just simple storage with DLNA.

If you happen to know about relativly cheap components, please let me know.

Isnt it a bit overkill? I need just storage that is capable of DLNA streaming with smb server running. I dont get why such machine should have 16GB of memory. The netgear nas that died was perfectly working with almost no memory compared to 16GB.

FreeNAS requires 8GB RAM. You could do it with 8, but then if you decide to do more and you are wishing for 16GB. Just start with 16 and be done with it. The amount of RAM is also related to the total size that FreeNAS is supporting.

I was more thinking about something like https://www.htpcguides.com/rebuild-bananian-kernel-with-sata-port-multiplier-support/ but with slightly better speeds. If it is even possible. http://www.openmediavault.org/ seems to do all I need.
