I built this gaming PC over a decade ago and need to upgrade my RAM now. I think it's my main bottleneck for gaming, aside from not having an SSD. I haven't had issues playing any game until now. Escape from Tarkov is the game that has made my want to upgrade. I've been using only 6 GB of RAM and never really needed more until now.

CPU: i7 920
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5
https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813128362
Current RAM: OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3
https://www.newegg.com/ocz-6gb-240-...381?cm_re=ocz_platinum-_-20-227-381-_-Product
GPU: Radeon RX 580 (recently upgraded to this)

Plain and simple...what would be the best RAM to upgrade to? Best performance for lowest price of course. Just looking for what my options even are at this point. Been out of the PC building scene since I built this rig.

Also, I just now realized that my RAM is 1600, but my mobo says it only supports "2100+/1333/1066/800". Haven't noticed any issues, but is this something I need to look at for purchasing my new sticks? Should I only be looking at 2100+/1333/1066/800, or is 1600 fine too?

I saw that already, but it doest really help. It seems really outdated or something. If you look through it, you'll notice it doesn't really list any good recommendations for 12gb in triple channel. There are only a couple. Can't download the form now but from what I remember when I looked, one of the only options was to buy 6 sticks of something. A lot of the suggestions you can't even buy anymore. The main thing I see available online is 1600, hence my other question.

So to summarize where we stand now...

  1. Recommended memory from Gigabyte is not practical to buy. Mostly not in stock.
  2. Would buying 1600 ram be an issue?
  3. The below two are really the only options on Amazon. Would either of these work? Is one recommended more than the other?

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL

If you can't buy any of that listed by Gigabyte or ram vendors then you will just have to take a punt.

If that's too hard, maybe it's time to think about an upgrade to cpu/motherboard and ram that is a bit easier to find (ddr4).

Just ran into something else....according to the manual for my board, I can run 4 sticks in triple channel. Is 3 stick triple channel the same as 4 stick triple channel? Sounds like an obvious yes, but just want to confirm.
Does this mean I can look for quad channel kits as well? Or is quad channel referring to separate configuration (dual, triple, quad)?

"When enabling 3 Channel mode with four memory modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_2, DDR3_3 and DDR3_5 sockets. "

Manual, page 16:

Just wanted to update in case this info was needed by anyone else in the future. Buying the RAM solved the issue. I have been able to play the game now and everything has seems to be running stable. Game just requires a lot of RAM and I didn't have enough.
