I’m upgrading my setup and need advice on a dual-monitor KVM switch.

Current Setup:
  • Lenovo laptop (20W9-S0E700) → Lenovo dock (DUD9011D1) via USB-C
  • Dock and my PC (MSI GT1030 with 1 DP + 1 HDMI) connect to an ATEN CS1922 KVM via DisplayPort + USB
  • Sharing one monitor (Dell U3415W), keyboard, mouse, and webcam between laptop and PC through the KVM
What I Want:
  • Replace the single monitor with two 27" 4K monitors
  • Upgrade the KVM because CS1922 limits 4K to 30 Hz (DisplayPort 1.2)
  • No daisy chaining
  • Have both monitors switch together (no independent switching between monitors needed)
  • Need at least 3 USB ports on the KVM for keyboard, mouse, webcam
  • Prefer a compact, reliable KVM that supports 4K @ 60 Hz on both monitors (Ideally similar size as the ATEN CS1922, because I put in a bracket mount under the desk: 21 x 8.8 x 5.55 cm)
Thanks in advance for your help!

First sketch out a diagram of what you have now and then, second, a diagram of the desired/required configuation.

Include all devices, ports, plugs, cable types, and genders.

You can google "KVM diagrams and images" to find many, many examples. Then filter the results to "Images".

Or apply other filters as applicable to your specific requirements.

The diagrams will be very helpful when comparing specific manufacturer KVM switch configurations to your requirements.

You must keep the proverbial "big picture" in view.

Remember that you may need to purchase additional cables and/or adapters.

Hello,

thank you for your replies. I have added a diagram.

Current configuration

Code:
+---------------------+           +--------------------------+
| Lenovo Laptop       | -- USB -->| Docking Station DUD9011D1|
| (Type 20W9-S0E700)  |           +--------------------------+
+---------------------+                      |
                                             | USB Signal
                                             | (for Keyboard/Mouse)
                                             |
                                             | DisplayPort Signal
                                             |
                                             v
+---------------------+        +-----------------------------+
| PC                  |        |                             |
| (MSI GT1030)        |-- USB->| ATEN CS1922 KVM Switch      |
| (DP & HDMI Outputs) |--DP--->| (Single DisplayPort Output) |
+---------------------+        +-----------------------------+
                                       |
                                       | DisplayPort Signal
                                       |
                                       v
                             +------------------+
                             |  Single Monitor  |
                             +------------------+

Desired Configuration

In the desired configuration, I want to replace the single monitor (Dell U3415W) with two identical 4k 27" monitors. Due to this, I have understood that I have to replace the KVM switch as well. therefore, I am looking for a KVM switch which allows me to run both monitors at 60 Hz.

Code:
+---------------------+           +--------------------------+
| Lenovo Laptop       | --USB-->  | Docking Station DUD9011D1|
| (Type 20W9-S0E700)  |           +--------------------------+
+---------------------+                      |
                                             | --(USB for Keyboard / Mouse)
                                             |
                                             | --(DisplayPort for Video Signal)
                                             |
                                             v
+---------------------+        +-----------------------------+
| PC                  |        |                             |
| (MSI GT1030)        |--DP--->| KVM Switch                  |
| (DP & HDMI Outputs) |--USB-->|                             |
+---------------------+        +-----------------------------+
                                       |
                                       |--(DisplayPort)--> [4k 27" Monitor 1 @60Hz]
                                       |
                                       |--(DisplayPort)--> 4k 27" Monitor 2 @60 Hz]

I am located in Europe, Germany. I have no preference regarding brands. I would like to get the least expensive option, which fulfills my requirements (hopefully <250 EUR). I can also go the daisy-chain route, if I need to. However, I would like to avoid this, in order to have more flexibility.

Very nice diagram.

Both the Lenovo laptop and the PC will be using dual monitors - correct?

Restated: if using the laptop then the laptop (and only the laptop) will be using both DP monitors. And likewise for the PC: it and only it will be using both DP monitors.

You do not need to or intend to have on computer one one monitor and the other computer on the second monitor.

Next step: Google "PC and Laptop KVM for dual monitors".

Revise the search with focus on Display Port outputs but do not neglect the other port types (USB) that are necessary. Doublecheck plug and gender requirements. Plus the likely need for additional cables. Avoid adapters if at all possible.

= = = =

As I understand the requirements thus far the following KVM (not an endorsement or recommendation) may be applicable to your needs.

Read the KVM Installation Guide paying close attention to all details, fine print, diagrams, etc..

And you are, of course, free to look for similar products by other manufacturers and sellers.

Thank you! Yes, either the laptop will use both monitors OR the PC will use both monitors and I want to toggle between them. I do not need to use one monitor with the PC and the other monitor with the Laptop at the same time. However, this feature would be a nice bonus.

What was your recommendation? I think that you have missed stating the KVM model which you recommend.

Unless I have some direct experience with and/or knowledge of a specific product I can only defer to those members who do have such experience or knowledge.

Or, perhaps, I may reference an applicable review or two via neutral parties.

Plus not all products are available in some geographical areas and/or may be out of budget due to cost, shipping, and tariffs.

My suggestion is to look for some KVM switch reviews and make your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice decisions.

[Remember that you may need to purchase cables as well.]

Post your choices accordingly.

Then other members make provide additional comments and suggestions as warranted.
