Hello there,

Recently I bought a brand new assembled desktop, all thanks to tomshardware community who helped me to assemble a beautiful system which I enjoy every day. Here are the details for it.

Motherboard - Gigabyte - GA-B85M-D3H-A
CPU - I5 - 4440
Ram - Kingston Hyper - 8gb
Harddrive - Seagate - 1tb
Monitor - LG 22MP56HQ
Graphics Card - Inno 3d ddr5 2gb - Nvidia GTX 960
Cabinet - Antech
SMPS - Antech VP650P

I would like to know what type of UPS would be suitable for such configuration. Currently my budget is INR 1500-3000, I can spend bit more, please advice me for the UPS so that I can buy that as well.

Regards
Ankit

Solution

UPS is only to protect unsaved data. Voltage fluctuations or power outages do not harm any properly constructed computer.

Voltage can drop so low that incandescent bulbs dim to 40% intensity. That can be problematic to motorized appliances. And is perfectly good voltage for any properly constructed computer. Why do lights not dim that much? AC power utility must cut off power before voltage drops that low - to protect the more at risk motorized appliances.

What more needs a UPS? Refrigerator, dishwasher, etc. That is...

Hello there, thanks for reverting back, no honestly speaking I live in a posh area of India with minimum power outages or fluctuations, however just for the purpose of safety in case of any unexpected voltage fluctuations or power outages I don't my system to get affected and also that I have enough time to safely shut down the system. That's the only reason I want the ups, do not have any plans of using my system on power back, just a safe shutdown and protection from voltage fluctuations. That's it

Okay, it seems like you want it for software protection only. If you are scared of hardware damage, simply buy a surge protector and the system will power down safely (hardware wise).

Software wise a power down can be damaging but they have done a lot in modern OS's to limit unintentional effects of shutting down the PC. I recommend just getting a backup hard drive and surge protector instead as it will protect your hardware and software if something were to go wrong.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. As a matter of fact I am using a surge protector. But I would still appreciate if you can recommend a good ups as well as I am planning to buy one. Please let me know which one I should go for.

BTW, a protector adjacent to a computer can even compromise / bypass superior protection found in computers. The effective protector always makes a low impedance (ie less than 3 meter) connection to single point earth ground. Protectors without that low impedance connection to earth do not even claim to protect from typically destructive surges. But again, those who ignore science and the numbers would instead recite what was promoted by advertising and salesmen.
