Recommendations for a 22" LCD

Well its time for me to finally upgrade from my old 19" CRT that I have had for 3 years, it is blurry and is getting worse. I play Counter-strike Source and I am looking to get a 22" LCD. I am not set on widescreen yet just because I have not had the chance to play on one. Would a wide screen just expand the current picture or would it actually increase my viewing angle? I have around $300 to spend... I am not to up to date about LCD's so I need some recommendations on some good ones. I will also be building a new computer soon so resolution with what video card shouldn’t be an issue down the road.

I read somewhere that the viewing angel is increased with widescreen in HL2. The viewing angels should be increased with widescreens in most games (atleast most new games) otherwise widescreen has no purpose. I have heard good things about Samsung syncmaster 226BW (i will buy it in a few weeks) but it costs more than $300. I am not good with screens so i cant give any useful advice .

Cool thanks for the info; I was not sure if it just stretched the picture out... I thought it did expand it and increase the field of view, but I wanted someone to confirm it since I haven’t ever used a widescreen for a monitor. I noticed that some monitors list there response time in gtg... I always thought it was from black to white to black or something like that. Is it just a way some manufactures measure there time to make it look like its better? If so what is a good time for something that doesn’t say gtg. Also since I play a first person shooter... would it make a difference from having lets say a 10ms response time vs. a 2ms response time, would that mean that I will be able to see someone appear on my screen 8ms fast or is this different since its just graphics and I assume not all of the pixels need to switch completely.

All i can say is to not trust what they say that the response time is, read reviews from different sources before deciding on a certain monitor.

And as for you question if you will see a person appear 8 ms faster on a faster monitor... i am not really sure, since it takes time to get a pixel to change color to the enemies color it would be less than 8 ms because you should be able to see a differance before that. This is not the important thing though, the important thing is that the movement isnt ghosting which is what happens if objects are moving to fast for the monitor (object get lines behind them because the pixels dont change colors fast enough).

Well I am thinking of going with this monitor from newegg. SAMSUNG 226BW Black - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001096. Anyone have any other suggestions or cons/pros about this monitor... going by neweggs reviews isn’t always the best thing since a lot of people aren’t always very computer savvy. I also checked some other forums and confirmed that pov_75 for normal; pov_90 for widescreen mode, so you do have a better field of view while playing cs source.

I think syncmaster 226BW is a good choice, i will buy it myself in about 2 weeks. I think it is the best 22" monitor in relation to its price. I havent read about any specific problems with it other than some people not getting the type of 226BW they wanted but they are all ok from what i have read (there are other threads about that).

Yeah I was looking at the dimensions of the 226BW and it shows them as 20.3" x 16.6" x 8.6" (WxHxD). Then i looked at BenQ FP222WH http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014139 and it shows its dimensions as 22.4" x 17.9" x 6.7" (WxHxD)... I am pretty sure they dont measure LCD screens like they used to with with counting part of the case as the size. So even though the BenQ is 700:1 contrast would it be a better idea to get that one since the screen is bigger? Would the difference from 1000 to 700 be really noticable?

All 22" LCD monitors uses the same size LCD panel.

There may be physical differences in the overall size of the monitor, but the panel size is always the same. It is not unheard of that physical dimensions could be wrong on e-tail sites.

I think ill go with the SAMSUNG 226BW. I might check around and see if i can find a S version... if not ill just cross my fingers and pray for one. It seems that the A version is still pretty good after you modify the colors, so either way it will be a huge improvement from my old blurry 19" CRT.
