Recommendations for a CD-ROM

I'm building a new system and I'm trying to figure out what the best CD-ROM drive is. I've looked all over the Internet and maximum PC and can't get any current recommendations. I've seen quite a few professional reviews on the Kenwood 72 TrueX but I've also seen a lot of consumer reviews that weren't so good. Also I can't find it for sale or in stock on any online vendors and I have tried about 50 different vendors plus computershopper.com and pricewatch.com. Plus, this drive is over 1 year old. I want a good CD-ROM for CD to CD-RW copies and fast audio extraction plus running games more efficiently. I just don't know what to get. No one seems to concentrate reviews on CD-ROMs unless they are CD-RWs or DVD/CD-ROMS. Hopefully a Tomshardware reader will give me a few suggestions. Thanks.

Have a look for info on the Asus 50X. I have read that this is a good drive for £39 UK price But I cannot confirm this myself.

Yes, the Kenwood can be a little flaky. I use plextor SCSI drives, but for IDE I would probably go with Teac or Asus.

There are two theories to arguing with women........neither of which work.

I've got the Asus 50x. It's a decent drive, but loud. It's also started making grinding noises on bootup (have had it installed for two months). Not usually a good thing.

I really reccomend you get a DVD drive.
they read CD's at 40x or 48x, are just as quiet, and u can look at dvd's too! :)

ive got a pioneer 106S.
ata 66, slow loading (looks cool)
audio data reading @ 40x
dvd @ 16x
audio cd DAE (ripping) @ 16x sustained for almost the entire disc.

combined with my ricoh 12x on the same ide cable i can do flawless cd to cd on the fly burns :)

i had a sony 52x, but i dumped it cauz it ripped too many error containing songs. plus it was loud and slow to spin up. DAE also sucked.

Is that a Northwoody in your pocket or are you just eXPited to see me?

Don't get an Aopen 52x. Mine has major problems reading certain CDs, like the driver CD that came with my GeForce 3.

I have a kenwood true-x 72x. The drive is amazing. It's quiet, quick and unfortunently very pricey. I think it's a sweet drive but i don't think it's worth $100. I got mine from compusa. I believe http://www.buy.com has the drive.

Sweet. I wonder how much faster it'll be than my true-X.

Well it too uses truex technology, just that it spins at 10x and has 10 lasers. I think the DVD will be very fast, considering it'll transfer faster than my hard drive!!

I would assume that since mine has 7 lasers it spins at about 10X also.

Hmm... Good idea. Then they'd have to use more than udma33. Hmmmm... A 520x true-x cdrom drive with 20mb buffer and 10 lasers. SWEET!!

There's no point in having a CD-ROM drive that's faster than an IDE RAID 0 because the hard drive will be the bottleneck. Plus, at 52X, it'll be loud.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor
