Hello, I would like some help as to NAS hardware.

Approximate Purchase Date: End of the year.

Budget Range: cheap as possible, after tax.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: NAS, streaming content to devices (iPhone).

Are you buying a monitor: No, using remote desktop to control if problems occur.

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon, Scan.

Location: UK, Kent.

Parts Preferences: None. Noctua NH-L9- looks nice.

Overclocking: If required, underclocking preferable.

SLI or Crossfire: No.

Your Monitor Resolution: 640*1138

I would like to stream content to my phone and both to my computer at the same time. Currently I've been using remote desktop on my iPhone to stream videos except sound does not work, perhaps a problem just for me or for others I am unaware but this method is too clunky inefficient and is reliant on download speed (I have 5MBps) with other family members watching youtube and or netflix it can often become unusable. I am correct in thinking that using a NAS is limited by router speed and drive speed rather than internet speeds right? As well as this my desktop is way too power hungry for long term use.

I would be storing recordings, videos, pictures, music, games I'm not playing etc... As well I like to experiment with writing viruses for Linux Distros on VMs. No distribution I promise, I just like watching it crumble. I find that P2P data transfers are preferable to using CDNs as my slow internet usually leads it to timing out which is an annoyance. So I would also like my NAS to be a torrent box too. All I really want it to do is show up as another Device/Drive in File explorer but with the functionality to steam to my phone. I have no idea what Tom's Hardware's stance is on jailbreaking but I use a jailbroken iPhone 5 running iOS 8.3 is there any tweaks or apps I would need for this?

I need the NAS to use as little power as possible, as quiet as possible. Size doesn't really matter eg if an ATX motherboard is better than an ITX motherboard it is perfectly fine to suggest the ATX motherboard. It also needs to be quite cheap, I need about 2TB of storage. I also have a raspberry pi b+ laying about, this would evade building a computer entirely, is that powerful enough and able to what I require? I could use USB to SATA splitters. I have no problem with using rather outdated hardware like the AMD 5XXX series CPUs as their low TDP and price are appealing. Preferably little maintenance once its setup.

Thank you for any suggestions, advice or just help on anything I've asked..

Power Consumption: 54w(celeron) vs. 35w(i3 4130T) TDP. G1820 should be enough power for a simple NAS and I think it does support ECC. It is much cheaper, but it may use more power. Go for it if you want to get a cheaper build that still has ECC.

After messing with some configs I've eventually ended up with this, higher TDP, a bit faster but with the ability to underclock. No ECC however but it doesn't seem too important. Would this fare me well?

I shouldn't have put that PSU in the part list. It is a tier 4 PSU. Get a tier 1 or 2 if you are going to be running your NAS for more than a few hours a day. (I would think a NAS would be run almost full time)

Get the Caviar Blue HDD for a little more performance or the RED if you think that WD's branding of it as NAS drive means anything. Also, you'd have to use a flash drive to store your FreeNAS OS on.

Using / Not Using ECC is your own choice. If you don't use ECC, you have a bunch of options. This CPU and Motherboard option looks okay.

That power supply uses poor capacitors. Go with an XFX 450W power supply or a Seasonic 420W power supply.
