You should be able to use a standard Xbox controller with an USB-A to microUSB cable to connect to the Pi4. The new Xbox Series X|S controllers come with USB-C ports though and would need a USB-A to USB-C cable. I’ve used it wirelessly with Bluetooth, so using it wired should be easy.I have a raspberry Pi 4 with the newest version of Retropie. What are some good Xbox game controller for Retropie newest.
I agree that a non-official Xbox controller would probably save a lot of money. I was thinking that if the OP has one already that it could be used with the Pi4. There are plenty of alternatives though. In all fairness, there are some really decent USB X Box controller clones on the market. I can't really see paying so much for the "real" controller for this application. Perhaps even try to find some of the older wired controllers if you just want the branded one.
I’m not sure what you mean about the buttons on the back of the controller. I’d say try the button that says Program. Do you have a screenshot or photos of the screen?I have one of these wired usb powera Mario controllers

I power on tyhe raspberry Pi 4 with the newest version of retropie 4.8.
It came up asking me to config the controller.
I noticed buttons on the back of the controller One was the located in the middle say Program button and the other two off to the sides says, AGR
So, what, do i hit the Program button to config the controllor
Oh, those aren’t typical for most controllers, but you should be able to assign them to something if you want to.
